With peak season for OCR starting to hit most of the country, more and more people are deciding which races are “must race” and which ones they can skip. In a perfect world, we could all run all of the races on the calendar, but the truth is, money comes into play. Below are our best tips to reduce travel costs, stretch your race dollars, and do OCR on a budget. Whether its choosing from Spartan Race vs Savage Race, or Rugged Maniac vs Warrior Dash, use these tips to get the most out of this season.
Also, be sure to always use promo codes when registering for races. We didn’t include that in our list, but it goes without saying that you should always be able to find a link on our site or through the races themselves.
Find a Community
The best way to save money in OCR is to lean on your friends. Facebook does a great job at bringing together racers from all over the country. Most OCR races offer discount codes for future races that you can only get by going to a race. If you talk to someone in New England who ran a Spartan Race, see if they got any promo codes you can use to sign up for a Spartan Race near you at a fraction of the cost.
Avoid the #OOTD Mindset
Every year, another jersey, high-performance shoe, or sweet new look from your favorite Spartan Race clothes shop has that thing that will make you look great in all those awesome race pics you’re going to be showing to everyone you know. It’s OK to use the same look you had last year because, let’s be honest, you’ll probably be covered in mud anyway!
Save on the Gym Membership
Look — to be good at obstacle course racing, you have to train, right? Well, you can train without a $120 gym membership, or an unlimited class pass to the boutique studio across town. There are tons of ways you can workout at home without spending a dime, or at the very least, find a big box gym that might not have a drill instructor yelling in your ear, but will still allow you to weight train without overspending.
Travel with Friends
It’s nice when going to a new city to have your own room so you can sit in the bathtub for an hour, order room service, and pamper yourself before and after a race. But that adds up, especially when you factor in race swag and shell out money for everything it takes to get to and from the venue. Travel with friends, share a room, split on gas, and race more races.
