Chances are that if you’re reading this, you might be on the verge of deciding whether or not to do a Spartan Race and wanted a little more information. Or, maybe you DID sign up and just want to know what you’re getting yourself into, in which case AROO! You made the right choice and will have a blast with the whole thing. In either case, there are some things you should know about Spartan Race that differentiate it from other OCR races like Spartan Race. Spartan Race is a different animal than races like Warrior Dash vs Tough Mudder, or Rugged Maniac vs Savage Race. Below, we listed some Spartan Race FAQ that will help you understand what you should expect when you’re out there with a few thousand of some other crazy people who want to test themselves against some of the best Spartan Race obstacles.
Tough Mudder is an event that forces you to work with others, at least on some of the obstacles. There are Tough Mudder obstacles like Human Pyramid, where you have to get up an inclined wall in which the base is in a mud pit; you can’t get a running start! So, you have to work with others at that obstacle to push and lift them to the top. Then, hopefully you can find some people to help you do the same.
There is a scene in Forrest Gump where Forrest meets Lieutenant Dan for the first time in Vietnam, and Lieutenant Dan tells Forrest that the one item of G.I. gear that is the difference between life or death is socks. While the stakes aren’t quite as high in obstacle course racing, having the best socks for Spartan Race can really make or break your experience.
For some, the idea of running through the mud and hopping over walls is fun, but the idea of running through 13 miles of mud and “hopping” over 10 foot walls is a bit too much to take on (at least for now anyway). There are obstacle course race events like Tough Mudder that you really need steady and determined training to complete. The good news for those who aren’t ready for the ultra-serious events is that there is another batch of obstacle course races for beginners.
If you’re going into battle, you wouldn’t do so without the right equipment — ammo for your gun and something to protect your head are key for success on the battlefield. Likewise in Spartan Race, you need the right gear. Spartan Race shoes, Spartan Race gloves, and proper Spartan Race apparel are all important if you want to make it out alive (or at least with a medal and a smile at the end of it).
When you compete in a Spartan Race, you put your body through some things it isn’t used to doing. For instance, chances are you don’t have to climb a 30-foot A-frame wall at the office, nor would you have to carry a 70 pound bucket of rocks between your daughter’s soccer game and family dinner. With that said, it’s not uncommon to come across a few spartan race injuries that range from cramps and strains, to freak accidents that can be much more serious. In Spartan, much like in life, you can be as careful as can be, and something could still go wrong. All you can do is attack the course with confidence and caution, and you should set yourself up for success.
